On November 4th 2006 nine people from Lakes Region
churches left for Louisiana, not knowing they were going to be assigned
to work in New Orleans. We went to volunteer with Samaritans Purse, a
Christian disaster relief agency. (Rotarians Chris and Ron St Cyr
were a part of this!!) We were quartered in a gym donated by the
city of Gretna, about 5 miles from the city of N.O, with about 50
others. From there we were sent all over New Orleans. We did small
jobs like cutting up a fallen tree and removing a refrigerator to
completely emptying and gutting homes.
No matter
what you see on television it cannot prepare you for the devastation and
the desolation of block upon block of uninhabitable homes. Amidst all
of this we had the privilege of working on the homes of several N.O.
policewomen. In addition, in the evenings we were able to go out and
assist in delivering of hot meals to the police and the National Guard. |
